LETTERS, Page 4Burning Issues
In his piece "In Praise of Censure," Garry Wills argues that
liberals can support the right to express dissonant political
beliefs without being viewed as approving of them (ESSAY, July 31).
But there is no certainty that anyone can accomplish this. It is
impossible, for example, for politicians to back the Supreme Court
decision on the right to set fire to the flag without being
portrayed as sympathetic to flag burning.

As Wills so ably points out, the First Amendment was adopted
to safeguard the unrestricted discussion of ideas. Censorship lies
not in the establishment of laws, rules and regulations that some
may find objectionable but in the suppression of free and open
expression.
